City of De Pere to Dedicate Flower Bed in Honor of Rose Smits

DE PERE, WI — The City of De Pere is proud to announce a dedication ceremony for a new flower bed honoring Rose Smits, a dedicated and tireless advocate for the beautification of our community. Smits' remarkable contributions span over a decade and have left an enduring mark on the city's landscape.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. and will take place in Voyageur Park, just outside the entrance to the Riverwalk.

Smits began her years of service with the De Pere Beautification Committee in 2009 and assumed the role of chairperson in 2010. She served with the group until 2021. Her leadership and vision have been instrumental in transforming the city's aesthetic appeal.

Under Smits' guidance, the De Pere Beautification Committee thrived, as did its many flourishes in the city, including vibrant roundabout arrangements and colorful bursts of nature in flowerbeds throughout De Pere. Her creativity also became evident in the seasonal additions she introduced, including charming birdhouses, hearts, and stars.

Smits also crafted the Beautification Committee's "Mission Statement," which aimed to promote beauty and civic pride by collaborating with the City of De Pere, Definitely De Pere, businesses, residents, and volunteers. Known for her undeniable enthusiasm, Smits had a knack for inspiring participation in her projects. For those who stepped forward to volunteer, she never took their efforts for granted. One of Smits' unique qualities was her habit of writing heartfelt "Thank You" notes to everyone involved in her projects, ensuring that everyone felt valued and appreciated for their contributions.

Mayor James Boyd said it was fitting that Rose be honored with a profound act of appreciation in return. A flower bed will be named in her honor in De Pere's signature park, Voyageur Park, near the entrance of what is arguably De Pere's most renowned gateway to natural beauty: The De Pere Riverwalk & Wildlife Viewing Pier.

"We all have a great deal of admiration for Rose Smits and appreciate everything she's done for our community," Mayor Boyd said. "Rose has been a humble yet powerful force behind the transformation of our city's landscape, and we are excited to honor her with this much-deserved recognition."

Following the dedication ceremony, a "Thank You" note of sorts will be left for Smits on behalf of all De Pere residents. Inside her namesake flower bed, a permanent sign will read: "Dedicated to ROSE SMITS for her many years of leadership and volunteerism with the De Pere Beautification Committee."
