Lifeguard Training Course

Looking to become a lifeguard in De Pere? To help you achieve this goal, a Lifeguard Training Class will be offered at the Ashwaubenon Community Pool (2391 S. Ridge Road) on the following 2020 dates: 

  • Friday, March 27 (5 p.m. – 9 p.m.)
  • Saturday, March 28 (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.) 
  • Sunday, March 29 (8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Age minimums and attendance requirements 

This course enables the participant to work at an indoor/outdoor pool or lake setting and also certifies the participant in First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.  Minimum age requirement is 15. Full attendance of all three days is mandatory to complete this course.

Skill requirements 

The following requirements must be completed in a satisfactory manner to continue in the course.                 

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously, using each of the following strokes:
    • Front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing, propellant kick;
    • Breaststroke using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing, propellant kick;

*There is no time requirement; however, the 300 yards must be continuous – no walking on the bottom or stopping at the side of the pool.

  1. Swim 20 yards front crawl or breaststroke, dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-lb object, return it to the surface, and swim 20 yards; head above water; on back; back to the starting point and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute, 40 seconds. 
  1. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

Registration and fees 

Registration will be accepted at the De Pere Community Center. (600 Grant Street) or online at www.de-pere.org.  Course #5351.1120.

The fee for the course is $135 for Residents & $150 for Non-Residents. This fee can be fully reimbursed upon one full season of employment with City of De Pere. The lifeguard textbook will be provided for the course. 

The registration deadline is Friday, March 20th.
