What is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that can infect any part of the body, but usually attacks the lungs.

Though TB is rare in Wisconsin, it can be spread to others by coughing, sneezing, or speaking, making it a threat to public health.

Together with the Wisconsin TB Program, De Pere Health Department helps identify people at risk for TB, provides education in the community and to providers, and facilitates treatment for people who have latent TB infection and active TB disease to reduce rates of illness.
