Protecting the Consumer

Consumer protection is the goal of the De Pere Health Department’s Weights & Measures program. The Weights and Measures inspector (City Sealer) checks businesses for:

  • Accuracy of weighing and measuring devices (e.g. small retail scales, gas pumps)
  • Scanner price accuracy
  • Product weights that are at or above the stated net weight (minus weight of packaging)

The program uses national standards found in National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Handbooks 44, 130 and 133. (link)

New Businesses

New businesses in the City of De Pere must license all weights and measures devices. These include:

  • scales
  • gas pumps and meters
  • scanner units
  • timing devices
  • yardage measures

New businesses should contact us to obtain licensing and to ensure that the devices you are buying meet the standards for a legal-for-trade retail device.

Weights and Measures Complaints

If you encounter a gas pump that is not dispensing the proper amount, a grocery store scale that is weighing inaccurately, a retail checkout scanner that is not scanning correctly, or any other related issue, contact us.
