COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus): City of De Pere

The City of De Pere is working in partnership with many state and local public health departments regarding COVID-19.  We continue to monitor the situation as it evolves around the state, we are prepared to respond, and we appreciate the support and cooperation of our residents and businesses during this ever-changing situation. 

To keep you informed of the latest developments pertaining to the City of De Pere and COVID-19, we will provide updates on this website, our social media channels, and through local media. Please review the latest updates below. Also, we encourage all residents to stay informed of the latest real-time recommendations and guidelines set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the CDC.

City-Wide Actions to Minimize Risk

  • We are committed to helping protect the well-being of our customers and employees. Our City departments will continue to provide essential services to our residents, but we are limiting public access to our facilities at this time. As a result, access to non-essential City facilities and municipal services will be temporarily suspended. By proclamation of Mayor Mike Walsh, public access to the following City facilities has been suspended until further notice (as of March 18):  
    • City Hall (except voter Registration and absentee voting in the City Clerk’s Office)
    • De Pere Community Center
    • Municipal Service Center
    • Police & Fire Stations (for public access) 
  • Residents seeking to conduct City business or obtain information about various municipal services should first browse the City’s website at www.depere.gov. From there, please attempt to email or call the appropriate City Department if you need assistance. All of the City’s departments contact information is available on the City’s website at this link.

  • In order to aid the efforts and operations of local businesses facing unprecedented hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of De Pere has enacted the Small Business Pandemic Response Loan program. This program was established through a special proclamation signed by De Pere Mayor Mike Walsh on Tuesday, March 31, and will remain in effect until further notice.
  • Under qualifying conditions, the City of De Pere’s new offerings may provide eligible small businesses up to $10,000 in small business, zero percent interest loans (payable over 48 months, including 12 months of deferred payments).  The City of De Pere will also defer existing Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) payments for up to 120 days under eligible conditions.

Health Department Updates
  • The De Pere Health Department is actively working to reduce the spread of disease in the community.  
  • The De Pere Health Department urges residents to stay informed the latest recommendations and guidelines set forth by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the CDC. Updates specific to COVID-19 in Brown County can be found at this link

Garbage & Recycling

Public Works
  • Scheduled trash and recycling pickups will continue without interruption, at this time. 
  • Effective Monday, March 30, 2020, city residents may place additional overflow garbage bags and recycling boxes/paper bags alongside their garbage/recycle can for collection. The household waste must be in bags and will not include bulky waste items such as mattresses, furniture, appliances, etc. Additionally, overflow recycling must be placed in boxes or paper bags alongside the recycling cart. Plastic bags are NOT acceptable at the recycling household material handling facility. See this graphic for more details on how to set-out your items. 
  •  De Pere Public Works will re-open our rubbish drop off site (925 S. 6th St) on Saturday, April 11, 2020) at 8AM … with the following changes:

    1) Vehicles will enter and stop for the attendant.
    2) The driver will show their ID through the CLOSED window to ensure they are a resident and to ensure social distancing.
    3) The items being dropped off must be openly visible to the attendant. When directed by the attendant, pull forward and unload.
    4) ONLY 1 vehicle will be unloaded at a time. Wait times may occur as a result.

  • The City's compost site remains open at this time.
  • We are starting our spring clean-up and residents can now place their yard waste and brush at the curb, NOT in the street and separated of course. The yard waste spring clean-up began Monday, April 6th. In addition, we will make an unscheduled rotation for brush collection as well. Residents can place brush out to the curb until April 17th for free collection. All yard waste and brush must be to the curb by 6:30A on Monday, April 20, 2020 to be collected by city crews.
  • The lobby of the Municipal Services building is closed to the public until further notice.

Voting, Elections &
City Clerk
  • April 7 election is over. 
Police
  • By proclamation of Mayor Walsh, prohibiting overnight parking is hereby suspended, until further notice (as of March 20, 2020). 
  • Front desk lobby will not be staffed. A non–emergency phone number will be provided at the City Hall entrance (920) 339-4078. No walk-ins unless a prior appointment
  • We are responding to all calls for service at this time but some calls for service may be handled over the phone. 
  • Fingerprinting services are suspended except for mandatory court ordered printing, which will be by appointment only.
  • Prescription Drug Drop Box suspended.

Fire Rescue
  • The Fire Department is responding to all emergency requests.
  • All fire stations are closed to the public for non-emergency business.
  • The Department has suspended all public education events and tours.
Public Meetings
  • All non-essential City meetings are being postponed until further notice.

Parks, Recreation,
Community Center
& Events
  • All De Pere Park & Rec programs and events have been cancelled until further notice. Find more details here
  • All parks and City trails remain open with the recommendation to utilize social distancing guidelines. 
  • All City of De Pere playground equipment is closed, until further notice. 
  • The De Pere Community Center is closed until further notice.
  • The first De Pere Beer Gardens event of 2020, scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, has been cancelled due to COVID-19. The status of future Beer Gardens throughout the remainder of summer is unknown at this point.
  • To help ease some of the stress of being sheltered at home due to COVID-19 and to provide an outlet for you to keep up with your fitness routine, the De Pere Parks & Rec will be offering online live fitness classes beginning the week of April 6th for 4 weeks. Learn more and sign-up here. 
  • For those who have signed-up and registered for Park & Rec programs, pro-rated refunds will be issued once the CDC and State have issued clearance to resume programming. Find more details here.

Water & Sewer Utility
  • Our water department will be staffed to ensure water continues to be delivered, however staff will not meet with customers in-person at this time. All questions or concerns will need to be done via phone (920-339-4060). 
  • For the time being, please pay your water bill online (at this link) or use the in-person drop-off box outside of City Hall (335 S Broadway).
  • DO NOT FLUSH "FLUSHABLE" WIPES in your toilet. Disinfecting wipes are being flushed down toilets and causing major pipe problems. Despite their packaging name, "flushable wipes," like a lot of other items would, will indeed flush but they don’t ever dissolve. Learn more here
  • Drinking water supplied by the De Pere Water Utility is high quality and is well treated. The virus cannot survive our disinfection process and is not transmitted through the drinking water. Our tap water is clean and, as always, exceeds all drinking water standards. Learn more here
  • The Wisconsin Department of Natural  Resources has recommended all water utilities suspend their cross connection inspection program. Until further notice, the City of De Pere is temporarily postponing all Hydro Corp cross connection inspections that had previously been scheduled through the month of May.
Municipal Court
  • De Pere Municipal Court will be open for scheduled hearings only starting June 24, 2020.

Building Inspections
  • All inspections will be performed to one- and two-family dwellings and additions, new commercial buildings and additions as normal.
  • All exterior alterations, fences, decks, sheds, accessory structures, pools and anything outside of the dwelling or building will be inspected as normal.

Economic Development
& GIS/Mapping

  • In regard to site inquiries, TIF assistance requests,  site plan reviews, zoning, CUP, PDD, etc: Staff will only receive digital applications, plans, and questions. Applications can be emailed to staff or submitted via a file share network supplied by the applicant (sharefile, dropbox, etc.). Checks must be mailed directly to De Pere City Hall to the attention of the Planning Division. Staff will not accept in-person payments. Checks must be received before applications can be reviewed issued. Staff will then arrange pre-application meetings via Go-To-Meeting with potential applicants.

As our community continues onward during these unprecedented times, we encourage everyone to keep in mind those who may not readily have food resources available for themselves or their families, or may simply need or desire assistance with food on occasion due to a multitude of reasons (work schedules, kids home more, etc.). If this applies to you, or if you know someone in this situation (please pass this along, if so), be advised there are a many options available to you in our area.
